Finding a quality Shar Pei breeder is not a chore. I have written down some ideas I have used to find that quality Shar Pei breeder.
First, you need to be sure that the dog you are looking for is a Shar Pei. Will this breed meet your needs and is your house or apartment set up for it?
Next, call a Shar Pei dog organization. They probably have a list or are themselves a quality Shar Pei breeder.
Finally, others who bought from the breeder you are looking at can be a wealth of information especially when you want to find a quality Shar Pei breeder. Spend the extra effort in contacting them.
I had no idea finding a quality Shar Pei breeder would be so difficult when I agreed to get my daughter one for her birthday.
Friends and family all shared their nightmare stories about getting a dog with this ir that wrong with it. No one seemed to be able to point me in the right direction as to where to start the search.
I went by our local dog park every day for two weeks before I finally saw someone with a beautiful, healthylooking Shar Pei dog. I talked to the owner and was thrilled when he agreed to call me later with the breeder's information.
The instant friendship between my daughter and her new puppy brought a joy to my heart that made it all worth it. It was also a relief to know that her new friend would probably be with her a very long time.
I groom my Shar Pei once or twice a week and I try to focus on taking away the dead hair while still gently revitalizing the skin glands to produce healthy oils. Making the session fun with treats and a soothing voice ensures that my Shar Pei will look forward to this time spent together.
If there is a section of fur that is especially matted, I use a touch of cooking oil and try slowly to work it out. If it still seems impossible, I will generally just cut it away with scissors rather than hurt my Shar Peis' skin.
By taking a brush and using it on the back of my own hand, I can test to see if the bristles are painful or soft. If they are painful, it is not a good idea to use it on my Shar Peis' skin.
Grooming is always a great opportunity to check the skin for any signs of parasites like fleas or mites. Any redness or painful and swollen spots should immediately be cause to call the veterinarian for a consult.
When your dog needs emergency medical attention, you should already know where to go. Plan ahead by knowing how much your vet will do and where an emergency hospital is located.
Most emergency situations with your Shar Pei will be costly. You may consider insurance if you cannot afford emergency care.
When there is an emergency there will be stress that will affect you and your family. Your dog of course will be stressed with the emergency also.
Having to deal with emergency care for your Shar Pei can seem unbearable when your dog is elderly.
My Shar Pei was crazy when we were driving, so I knew he needed some lessons in car manners. To begin with, I taught him to sit before entering the car and to lie down in the back seat. I looped his leash through the seatbelt to keep him from hopping around the back of the car.
Once he was calm and lying down, I would start the car and we would just sit there listening to the radio for a few minutes.
Since he was still lying down quietly, I backed out into the street and started driving slowly away from the house.
He soon learned that any barking would result in my pulling the car over and we would get out calmly. After a few times, he began just looking out the window instead of barking and we could drive without having to pull over.
When we brought the little baby home I thought I had everything ready that we could possibly ever need.
It wasn't until after the doggy kisses were kind of brutal and nasty smelling that I got a clue that I hadn't planned for everything. The poor little puppy was going to need his teeth brushed and I wasn't sure how to do that.
So, I did an online search about pet dental care and, more particularly, about brushing a dog's teeth. I then went out and purchased a fingertip toothbrush and some awesome smelling chicken liver toothpaste.
One piece of advice I also got at the pet store was to never use people toothpaste when brushing the teeth of a dog. There are some ingredients that are harmful to dogs if swallowed and dogs just can't be taught to spit it out in the sink.
Overall, there are numerous qualities to consider in either gender if you are purchasing the dog for your new family.
Depending on if you would like a litter of puppies in the future, this could be used to choose the right gender for you.
In this regard, deciding on a male or female Shar Pei puppy is not the hardest part of getting a new dog, especially when you have decided on a Shar Pei, most of the work is already done for you.
Generally there are no hard and fast rules to use in choosing either a male or female Shar Pei puppy.
After searching for a new pet puppy, it is recommended to find a quality Shar Pei breeder to buy your new dog.
As a new member of your family, it is useful, to ensure your new Shar Pei is of the highest quality. This can be done by choosing a quality Shar Pei breeder to make your selection.
The local pet society is one of the best places to receive useful information on the lists of quality breeders in the area. After obtaining this information, contact each breeder individually to determine which one would have the animal I was looking for.
Therefore, it is possible to receive a dog of high pedigree, without the complications of dealing with a terrible breeder.
While playing with the puppy at the dog park today I was approached by members of the local Shar Pei Rescue/Adoption organization. They wanted to know if I would consider becoming a foster parent to rescued Shar Pei dogs.
I explained that I wasn't familiar with the fostering or rescue activities surrounding dogs and that I couldn't imagine anyone every giving up a Shar Pei dog. The lady then explained that because Shar Peis are such a popular breed there are often more Shar Peis than other breeds needing placement into foster or adoption situations.
The rescue/adoption organization works with local authorities to find placements for dogs who may have been given up by their owners or who may have been lost, abandoned or abused.
I explained that I didn't have the physical resources of time and energy to take on the responsibility and commitment of another dog at the present time. I do think, however, that I will look into donating other resources to assist their cause it seems like a good thing to me.
The very first time I took my Shar Pei to visit friends in the country, he ran off with their dog and they came back stinking of skunk! My friend seemed to be used to this sort of thing, and told me that bathing them in tomato juice wouldn't work.
She mixed up a concoction of baking soda, hydrogen peroxide and liquid detergent and used it to bathe the dogs.
We held my Shar Pei still while letting the mixture soak into his fur for about five minutes. Then we rinsed him off with water and repeated the process another time just to get any residual odor out.
My Shar Pei certainly smelled better but his fur was a little lighter. WARNING: Mixture may bleach fur!
